Hopefully you have figured out the
code phrase “recalled to life”. The reference is to Lucie Manette’s
father, Dr. Alexandre Manette. Apparently Lucie thought her father died
before she was born, but that’s not true. He has been a victim of a lettre
de cachet. This letters were signed and sealed by the King of
France and one of his ministers. These letters allowed for the
imprisonment of a person without explanation or trial…and that’s what has
happened to Lucie’s father. Now Jarvis has been charged with bringing
Manette back to life and he wants Lucie to help. This is the first of
numerous references to resurrection in this novel. Keep an eye out for
them.
You should be asking a bunch of
questions by the end of this chapter. Why was Dr. Manette
imprisoned? How did he get out? What has his time in prison done to
him? How will he react to seeing his daughter for the first time?
How will Lucie react to seeing him? (She did say she would be seeing a
ghost.) Are they safe going back to France? How will they get him
out of France? Does Dr. Manette even care to be recalled to life?
For now, they only answer I have for you is the voice of Lorry’s dream specter,
“I can’t say.”
