Ah, Jarvis Lorry. As I
mentioned in class, he’s a good man. Don’t believe me? Check out
Dickens’ description of his eyes and his hesitation when speaking to
Lucie. Despite his claim that he’s only a machine and that “it’s a matter
of business,” I’m not buying it. Plus, Lucie seems to recognize
him. “Are you quite a stranger to me, sir?” If fact, he’s not a
stranger to her. He’s the man who brought her over when she was two.
Then there’s Lucie. I know, I
know, another Lucie. At least this one is in no danger of becoming a
vampire. There’s no coincidence about the name though, remember, the name
means light and our little Miss Manette is going to be the light of this
novel. Check out her description, she’s blond, lovely, graceful….get the
picture.
Finally what about the lady in red,
with red hair and the funny hat? That’s Miss Pross or as I like to call
her “Prossy” (rhymes with bossy). She’s a woman of business, and like
Jarvis, she takes her job very seriously. Her business is Lucie – making
sure that Lucie is safe, happy, and healthy. She’s pretty intense, but
she means well.
Oh yeah…and about the recalled to
life thing…I think something about that was explained. Maybe that
warrants its own post.
